Use in the Classroom or Educational Setting
IDEA- During first grade, students have a Life Science united titled "An Animal's Life." This unit covers an animals habitat, the life cycle of a butterfly, as well as comparing different animals found in the school yard. I will use this Padlet to help parents at home further investigate the unit and enhance a student's learning. I will also use this Padlet while in class to introduce the students to the documents contained on the Padlet so students will have an idea of what is on there when working with parents at home. While I won't necessarily teach the information from this Padlet in the classroom, it will be a good resource for the at-home connection.
Copyright- While my students are only in first grade, I will begin to introduce them to copyright in the classroom. We will start up by working on classroom artwork and then introduce copyright on the internet. I will show them where to find copyright information and when is a good time to give credit to someone.
Application
Looking back on week one there are many principles that align with my lesson. Students will be given background knowledge within the classroom and have a basic understanding of the material when they go home to work with their parents. The principles align because it will allow parents and students to see printed vocabulary as well as watch movie and see images to go with that vocabulary. Students will become more successful in the classroom when they have the opportunities to work with their parents at home. Students who work with the padlet will use the segmenting principle. This principle will allow the students to advance at their own pace as well as read and re-read material as much as needed.
Reflection
Before working on this project I had known little about copyright. I truthfully often pick a video offline and show to my students without thinking of copyright. After completing this project I have discovered that some of my resources I use in my classroom that may have specific copyrights. I will make a conscious effort to show my students material that is not copyrighted when working on various subjects. One thing I found most interesting from the project this week is learning about all the different copyrights. I never realized all the various types of copyrights and what you can and cannot do with those copyrights. One tension I noticed between using the Padlet and design principles was this type of multimedia does not allow for the Personalization Principle to take place. When parents are working with students they may not always realize to put the information into terms the students better understand as well as students aren't getting the opportunity to discuss the new information with other students in the classroom. I really enjoyed this project. One of my focuses for next school year is creating a classroom/1st grade website and I believe this would be an awesome resource to include on the website for parents to gain easy access to new types of information or to even share information with other parents. It was a bit tricky to figure out at first, but once I got everything figured out it was quite simple and easy to navigate. From this project I was also able to gain a better understanding of the basics of copyright and how to share the information appropriately. I know have a better awareness of when something is copyrighted and when something may be allowed to share.
Hey Sarah, I loved going through the artifacts on your padlet! Thinking of the age group you have with first graders, I thought everything was appropriate for their use. Going with so many visuals and an engaging story was a great idea. I often wonder how technology can be implemented at the early elementary level and this is a great way to do it! I also liked your take on allowing the parents to access it as well.
ReplyDeleteSarah, Nice job with the padlet assignment! Good layout, appropriate visuals and information pertaining to the topic for first graders. Keep up the good work!!
ReplyDeleteSarah,
ReplyDeleteI love your Padlet! This is such a unique way to get parents involved in their students' education! I also loved the variety of resources you used to help the students explore this topic: song, pictures, articles, etc. I think this will give students a deeper understanding of your topic.
I also gave no thought to copyright laws when I would use resources in my classroom. I will need to revamp many of my lessons that I used this year to make sure they fit the copyright law!
Great job!

I definitely enjoyed seeing this assignment from an Elementary teacher's point of view. Often I get so caught in the high school curriculum, I forget there are actually fun activities teachers get to do with students. This was definitely one of those fun looking activities. The fact that students got to involve their parents is awesome, and shows that you are working to make your classroom dynamic. Nice job.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great way to give students resources to access. The copyright, as long as you are introducing it, they can learn more every year.
